Volvo Receives Five Hybrid Bus Order from Luxembourg

Published On Jun 24, 2016By Prashant Talreja

Looks like hybrid has become the new trend in city-transport and Volvo is leading the way. After Bengaluru Metropolitan Transportation Corporation (BMTC), India chose these Volvo hybrid buses, Luxembourg’s city bus operator Autobus De La Ville De Luxembourg (AVL) has made a deal for five more Volvo electric hybrid buses. There are already 14 buses operating in the city as per a deal made in 2011. It’s to be noted that Luxembourg is one of the first cities in the Europe to opt for pollution free passenger commuter solutions.

Set to be delivered at the end of 2016, these Volvo 7900 Electric hybrid buses are powered by an electric motor, batteries and a small diesel engine. Along with the buses, the company would also provide ABB modular chargers, which come with three power output options of 150, 300 and 450 kW. These chargers can also be used in the already running buses.

According to the company, the new Volvo 7900 Electric Hybrid buses can run on electricity for 70 percent of the time. These vehicles emit 75-90 percent less carbon if compared to a conventional diesel bus. The bus can go for a 10 km run on a single charge. Commenting on the deal, First Mayor of Luxembourg City, Mr. Sam Tanson, said, “The decision to operate the first electric hybrid plug-in buses by the end of 2016 in the City of Luxembourg perfectly aligns with our continuous efforts to create a sustainable city. The society will immediately benefit from this project through a cleaner environment, reduced noise levels and increased comfort during bus journeys. This ambitious pioneering project represents the starting point in our endeavour to a zero emission urban bus system for the City of Luxembourg in the near future.”
